Around once every 4 - 6 weeks....Dory (a boy) begins to leave this layer of bubbles on the top of the bowl. (visible in the photo here)
Left alone, this mini-bubble layer just gets larger and larger...never popping...just floating there. After a minute on Google, I discovered that Dory (a boy) is making a nest.
It appears that though the female beta lays the eggs, it's the male that builds the nest for those eggs. It appears that our little fish keeps hoping and praying that he's gonna get lucky soon. I do'nt know how to break it to him (as he is already quite emotionally unstable) but that's not gonna happen!
I keep scooping out the bubble nest, only to see that the next morning he's at it again. This seems to go on for a week or so, and then the phase ends. I guess it's the male-beta's "time of the month" or something similar. Poor thing. I wonder if he'll learn the truth.
What truth is that? My fish will forever be celibate. A monk. He can blow all the bubbles he wants...but it's never gonna happen. He's single. And he's gotta find a way to be 'okay' with that!
His new owner (my Mom) will no doubt have plenty of fun watching this poor emotional-wreck-of-a-fish deal with life.
Hi there. I'm Yvonne, and I'm a wife, Mom of 2 and business chick. Welcome!
