The Gift

Anneka has been saving her money. She has a wallet full of change, a 5 dollar bill, and a Walmart Card (from Renee) with $5 on it. (Anneka loves the idea of paying with plastic! haha)

So yesterday, I told Anneka that with her $11.00, she could buy a toy at Walmart. She was so excited! Off we went to do some shopping. She talked about only spending $6 at Walmart, and using the rest at Dollarama. She scoured the aisles, picking out $25.00 toys...and then doing the math and sadly putting them back on the shelf.

At one point...I heard a squeal.

Anneka: Oh Mommy!!! Look!
Yvonne: What did you find???
Anneka: It's the Epet that Aila has been wanting!
Yvonne: Oh?
Anneka: Yeah...you know...the spotted puppy! She would love this...and look! There is only ONE left on the shelf!
Yvonne: Yup...that's the one she's been talking about! But today we're shopping for your toy. Let's keep looking, okay?
Anneka: Mommy....
Yvonne: Yes?
Anneka: I want to buy this for Aila.
Yvonne: But Anneka...it will take all your money...and there would be nothing left for you. It's a VERY sweet idea...but you don't have enough to buy something for you and something for Aila. Why don't you pick one for yourself?
Anneka: *thinking*

Anneka: Mommy...
Yvonne: Yes?
Anneka: I want to use all my money on Aila. I know that I won't have enough for me...but Aila would be SO happy! And Mommy... my sister is more important to me than having a new toy. I want to buy this for her.

*Mommy choking up*

She took that little dog, put it in the cart, and began skipping toward the checkout. I stood there watching her...wondering how incredibly amazing this little girl was. What kid would work that hard to save...and then walk away with nothing for herself...but the idea that she was about to make her sister's day??

I looked at the other epets on the shelf, and grabbed the one Anneka had liked, and put it in the cart without her seeing.

At the self-checkout, I let Anneka scan the toy, and swipe her card....and pop her money into the machine.

Yvonne: Giving is a great feeling, isn't it?
Anneka: It's the BEST feeling Mommy...
Yvonne: I love that feeling. The one you get when you've made someone happy.
Anneka: Me too!
Yvonne: I'm about to get that feeeeling...
Anneka: Huh?

I took the other epet out of the cart and handed it to Anneka.

Yvonne: I'm buying YOU one too...because you thought of your sister above yourself....
Anneka: OH THANK YOU MOMMY!!!!

What a great kid....!!

awwwwwwww!!!!! I hate to be the pooper to rain on the goodwill parade but have you registered them already? Make sure you register them under the same account, cause they expire after a yuear and you can only bring them back to life by registering a new one. And every time you add one to the same account you get the credit which extends their lifetime. very tricky marketing scheme

Hey Vikk

All 3 are registered...since playing online is allll the fun about them. These are Rescue Pets. According to the site, while WebKinz expire after one year, RescueEpets don't expire.

I"m not sure they'll still be interested in them in a year...but oh well! Buying 2 costs as much as eating out ONCE at McDOnalds. And hey...they don't poop them out after a few hours....hahaha

just if they get more, you need to add them to the same account is what I heard. I'm not sure how I escaped that madness. My boys are totally not interested...

How cool. I can only hope for this kind of generosity in my kids. They do often think of each other and are always putting their 'treats' aside to give to their sibling. I hope it continues!

I was thinking last night, wondering how on earth I could teach my kids to be like that. But truly Sandra & Joann are right: this wonderful quality in Anneka is the same quality her mother posseses and I realized the answer is right in your blog...YOU, by example, taught your kids to think of others first (obvious to everyone else... but I'm a bit slow)

So this story, although definitely about a wonderful kid, is very much about a wonderful mom -- YOU!!!! Your daughter was not simply born this way (altho I'm sure her nature has a lot to do with it), but you taught her this behavior. and how wonderful to see it in action!
